Turle Bay Hotel Employees Vote to Strike

Sept 14, 2012

NORTH SHORE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) –

Hotel employees at the Turtle Bay Resort voted overwhelmingly Thursday to authorize a strike

Of the roughly 350 workers who were eligible to vote, 290 voted in favor of giving union leaders the authority to call a strike. Union leaders say 100% of the vote favored strike authorization.

Local 5 says that workers at Turtle Bay have been without a new contract for more than two years.

George Cox, a 29-year employee at the Turtle Bay Resort said, “Enough is enough. This is the last and best place to live on Oahu and we’ve got to keep the North Shore a viable place for people to work and play.”

Danna Holck, Vice President and General Manager of Turtle Bay said, “We are very disappointed with the results of the vote and the decision to position for a strike.  Our availability and willingness to negotiate terms since July 2010 have been delayed by union negotiators.  It has always been our intent to finalize a fair and equitable contract as quickly as possible to provide our employees with the benefits they deserve.”

Holck says the resort continues to operate without interruption.

The strike authorization does not mean a strike is imminent, but that union leaders may call a strike at any time. It gives them some leverage in their ongoing contract talks with hotel management.
